This got a bit out of scope, but with some nice additional features: build injection image extended to support building standalone images, and a root-level test runner added to run smaller tests (like build_maps.py). A few tests still need fixing, and it should be ready to merge soon.

I also noticed that test_whitebox_update_version.py is not being tested in CI, likely because we don’t have a centralised way to run smaller script-level tests. This change should provide a solution for that.
